Matt Hebermehl

On Divine Wings, We Shall Prevail

2017 | Acrylic paint

Incorporating the Atlanta Falcons team colors —red, black, silver and white — On Divine Wings, We Shall Prevail is a three-wall, site-specific painting created by American artist Matt Hebermehl. The polychromatic feather motif creates a dynamic visual vortex, which represents the synthesis of teamwork and camaraderie. The transformative mural also alludes to the 16th-century proverb, “Birds of a feather flock together,” often attributed to English physician and ornithologist William Turner.

Matt Hebermehl creates transformative visual vortexes. His work shape-shifts to fit space and occasion, from the crumpled confines of a sheet of thermal paper to the broad expanse of a wall. A SCAD alumnus, Hebermehl (B.F.A., illustration, 2003) often collaborates with artists to paint compelling and visually striking murals that celebrate the surrounding community. The Los Angeles-based artist is the cofounder of SeeSAW, a Savannah, Georgia, arts organization mobilizing artists, businesses, officials and residents to create contemporary public art. In 2013, the Savannah City Council adopted a policy developed by SeeSAW to enable and protect the creation of such art on private property. Since then, Hebermehl and others have enlivened spaces throughout the city and SCAD buildings, with dynamic compositions that blend history and prophecy.
