Telstar

2018 | Stainless steel

This monumental artwork honors soccer as a global spectator event, conveying the layered and dynamic qualities of the beautiful game and the joyful experience of fan participation. Named after the first multi-panel soccer ball used in the FIFA World Cup Finals (Mexico City, 1970), Telstar is a playful interpretation of this iconic design. The sculpture celebrates the emergence of Atlanta United and the continued growth of soccer as a major sport in America.

Studio Roso is an interdisciplinary practice that fuses architecture, art and design to create poetic, site-specific installations. Founded in 2008 by Danish designers Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen, Studio Roso’s geometric work elicits an emotional response from the viewer, igniting a relationship between art and audience. The studio’s main emphasis is on the interface of nature and craftsmanship, and the way in which the extraordinary can be made from everyday materials. Nielsen and Knudsen both create highly bespoke artwork, each responding to the inherent potentiality of elemental materials and the essence of the environment their art eventually inhabits. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2004, the pair has been awarded numerous commissions and prizes for large public sculptures, and their work is part of private collections and has been exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the historic Hampton Court Palace outside London and elsewhere. The London-based duo also has commissioned works displayed in London, Toronto and Boston, Massachusetts. Additional custom creations have been produced for corporations, public spaces, private collections, museums and luxury retailers, including Tiffany & Co., The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC, Hugo Boss, Fortnum & Mason, Morgans Hotel Group and The Famous Grouse. Studio Roso's monumental new artwork for the Falcons stadium is a playful, aesthetic take on the iconic soccer ball. It is a celebration of the soccer ball game as a spectator event, conveying the qualities of this layered, dynamic game and the experience of seeing this. It is also a celebration of the birth of the new Atlanta United team and the arrival of soccer as major sport in the USA.
