About Corky Kell Classic
The 2018 MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic marks the third year of the event’s three-day, nine-game lineup. The Corky Kell Classic will kick off the high school football season with a doubleheader on Thursday, August 16, for the first time at Rome’s Barron Stadium. Georgia State Stadium will host its second year of Classic action on Friday, August 17, with a star-powered pair of games. To close out the 27th edition of the Classic, a five-game marathon at the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium will take place on Saturday, August 18.
The Classic launches the highly competitive high school football season in Georgia every August with partial proceeds benefiting the Kell Foundation to fund scholarships. Throughout the years, the games have included top talent in both Georgia and across the nation. Marketed and operated by Score Atlanta and a group that includes former successful high school coaches Dave Hunter and Jim Dorsey, in the past five years the Classic has reached more than 4.25 million television and internet viewers with a total game attendance of more than 255,000 fans.
The 2018 Corky Kell Classic will include three teams that are reigning state champions (Calhoun in Class 3A, Rome in 5A and North Gwinnett in 7A), a state runner-up (Colquitt County in 7A), four teams that made it to the semifinals (Brookwood in 7A, McEachern in 7A, Tucker in 6A and Buford in 5A), three teams that made it to the quarterfinals (Archer and Marietta in 7A and Mays in 6A), four teams in the second round (Mill Creek, Milton and Walton in 7A and Ridgeland in 4A) and one team in the first round (Norcross in 7A). The 18 teams were a collective 183-51, for a winning percentage of 78.2.
